Future of Past

This week I had the opportunity to sit down with Hungarian indie game developing company Black Riddles and discuss their upcoming game Future of Past.  Black Riddles has built a beautiful world with unique characters and art blending together elements of action/adventure games and RPG.  Future of Past starts off with you as a goblin in the 1400s.  Your character escapes from prison fleeing into the far future of the 2400s.  There the game’s story evolves into an adventure quest with you gathering allies throughout the game that help you through the story mode.

The game promises a unique take on the time travel scenario, even with plans of offering multiple endings based on your decisions.  As the story progresses you are provided with various options which not only impact the immediate future of your characters, but can also change how the game can end.  The single player mode of the game offers you the ability to cycle through the various characters, and even combine the powers of those on your team when fighting enemies.  As the game progresses the characters can level up, adding a type of RPG feel to the game.

Future of Past also offers multi-player co-op mode.  The co-op mode allows you and your friends to complete the various quests together, as opposed to the single-player method of switching characters throughout the game.  The co-op mode will allow each player to take control of one character.  This will offer the players a chance to not only play with their friends, but the ability to work together in order to progress through the game.

Black Riddles has been developing the game using CRYENGINE, which is the same engine used for Ryse: Son of Rome, and the Crysis series.  So needless to say so far the levels look beautiful.  The development gameplay videos that have been released show off beautiful set designs reminiscent of a fantasy world based in the 1400s.  The team’s composer has been creating music adding to the game’s unique atmosphere.

Black RIddles is developing their game using the CRYENGINE bringing stunning graphics to the level.

The game creators say they drew a lot of inspiration from games like Skyrim, The Witcher, and Mount and Blade; however I found the game also reminiscent of classic action/adventure RPGs like Chrono Trigger, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.  Future of Past is being developed for release on the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC; along with a mobile mini-game that will have direct integration into your main game.  You can see more and follow their progress on Facebook.
