Hey Nerdiots. I’m back with another column. I know you’ve all come to expect me to be on the cutting edge of technology with timely opinions on pressing matters and also dad stuff. So here I am weighing in on the great debate of the day. Xbox One? Or PS4? That’s right, there are many of us out there who still haven’t made their next generation console purchasing decision. There’s a lot of factors to take into consideration when making the big decision of which console you’re going to throw your money into. For a gaming family it can be a big investment. It’s not just about buying one console. One console will probably become two consoles when there’s a teenager in the house, and you don’t want two different consoles when you intend to share games. This is not a decision to be made lightly. Especially for a broke-ass like myself. So how do you pick?

I could go find some specs to compare and copypasta it all over this column and then hammer on about what they mean but the truth is I wouldn’t have the slightest idea what I’m talking about. I know nothing about that kind of stuff. But from what I’ve read on the internet the PS4 technology was brought from the future by Captain Jean-Luc Picard to aid in the evolution of mankind, whereas the Xbox One is allegedly made up of diapers and dinosaur bones and it may explode if you leave it on for more than 5 minutes. Seems like a pretty easy decision, right? Not so fast! There’s more to consider. The price. At first the PS4 was clearly the better value. It was considerably cheaper. But again my frugality kept telling me to wait. If I was waiting for the PS4 then I was due for a disappointment though. Living in Canada meant a sudden $50 price INCREASE in the spring of this year. Not what I was hoping for. Then Microsoft followed that with an announcement of an Xbox One without the NSA-approved kinect peripheral for $100 less. Now the Xbox One is available for less than the PS4 where I live. Your move, Sony.

I’ll be honest here. When the consoles were first announced I was heavily leaning toward the PS4. I’ve been an Xbox guy for a lot of years. I never owned a PS2 or PS3. But when Microsoft made their original announcement for the Xbox One, I, and the rest of the collective internet went full on rage mode. But there is a final factor that will truly determine which console will be the next console in my home. My kids. My teenager loves Halo and my 6 year old’s favourite games are the Forza motorsports titles. I already know that my next console will be an Xbox One. But I’m in no hurry to get one. There’s no titles out there just yet that have convinced me to drop 400 bucks on a new system. And I’m still having way too much fun with my 360.
